Large and potentially hazardous asteroid will fly by earth on 29 April 2020. But it is no threat to earth. Asteroid (52768) 1998 OR2 is to make a close approach to earth. It has an estimated diameter of 1.1 to 2.5 miles and about the width of the isle of Manhattan. If it crashes to earth it could wreak havoc, which it won’t.
The asteroid will be closest to earth at about 5:56 a.m. EDT and will be 3.9 million miles (6.3 million km) from Earth. NASA has classified asteroid 1998 OR2 as “potentially hazardous” as it fulfils certain criteria in the agency’s classification scheme. For NASA an asteroid is “potentially hazardous” if its orbit ever intersects Earth’s orbit at a distance less than 4.6 million miles. The asteroid orbits the sun in between the orbits of Earth and Mars. It will next fly by earth in May 18, 2031 and will be 12 million miles from our planet.
