National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national level scholarship program to nurture talented students. This exam is conducted by NCERT. This can be taken from class X. There are two stages for the exam, Stage I and Stage II

Application for the exam is released in the period July – August.

Only those who qualify stage I are eligible to appear for stage II examination.

Eligibility

The general eligibility criteria for candidates appearing for NTSE exam are:

  • Must be an Indian citizen
  • Must be in class X
  • Unemployed candidates below the age of 18, studying in class 10 from open or distance learning are also eligible to apply

Exam Details

Stage I – Conducted by the state or union territory (UT) will be in the month of November

Stage II – Conducted by NCERT at the National level in May

For both stages the exam is conducted in offline mode.

Application fee for stage I differs based on the state/UT. However, there is no fee for stage II.

There is no prescribed syllabus for the examination. However, questions will be asked at based on the syllabus of  class IX and class X

Stage I

This will have two papers, Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

  • MAT: Fundamental verbal and non-verbal reasoning
  • SAT:  Mathematics, Science and Social Science of class IX and X (based on the state syllabus)

Stage II

This will also have two papers, Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

  • MAT: Fundamental verbal and non-verbal reasoning
  • SAT:  Mathematics, Science and Social Science of class IX and X (based on the NCERT syllabus)

While preparing for the examination conceptual knowledge of the syllabus is required. Take as many mock tests as possible. Analyze your answers truthfully to understand your weak areas.

In both the stages, each paper will have100 questions and total of 100 marks each. These are multiple choice questions and there is no negative marking. The duration of both the papers for stage I and stage II is 120 minutes.

The scholarship amount varies for different stages of education.

  • Rs.1250/- per month for Class-XI to XII
  • Rs.2000/- per month for Undergraduates and Post-graduates
  • For Ph.D. amount is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms
