Qatar declares to withdraw from OPEC in January 2019

Qatar chose to pull back from the OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) from January 2019.  This declaration was made by Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad al-Kaabi at a press conference in Doha.  Moreover, this is the first time that a Gulf country is leaving the bloc of oil-producing countries.

India pays homage to the first President Dr Rajendra Prasad

The nation paid homage to the first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, on his 135th birth anniversary on 3rd Dec 2018.  Born in 1884, Dr. Prasad was in office from 1950 to 1962.

December 3rd – International Day of People with disabilities

The world observed 3rd December as the International Day of People with disabilities.  UN had promoted this international observance since 1992.  Furthermore, this year’s theme is Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’.

Train 18 to launch on Christmas Day

Indian railways is all set to dispatch Train 18, country’s fastest rail, on 25th December 2018.  The route is likely to be between New Delhi and Varanasi.  The train set does not require a locomotive because it is a self-propelled on electric traction, similar to metro trains.

Chief Guest at Republic Day Celebrations 2019 – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will be the chief guest at India’s 70th Republic Day festivities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited Mr. Ramaphosa, when the two pioneers met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires.

UN Climate Change Conference 2018 – COP24 Held in Poland

The yearly UN environmental change meeting (COP24) opened in the Polish city of Katowice on December 3, so as to execute the rules for the Paris Climate Change Agreement.  In 1992, a treaty was drawn by the UN to ‘stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere’, so as to prevent dangerous interference from human activity on the climate system.  137 nations had signed this treaty. The UN holds a conference of parties (COP) every year, since the treaty had come into effect in 1994.  This year’s COP is the 24th one.

Ajay Narayan Jha – the new Finance Secretary

Ajay Narayan Jha is appointed as the new Finance Secretary on Monday, 3rd December 2018.  The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared his appointment.  Ajay Narayan Jha is a 1982-batch IAS officer of Manipur Tripura cadre.  Moreover, he succeeds Hasmukh Adhia, who retired on November 30.
