World Sparrow Day 2020

0 245

Today is world sparrow day for raising awareness of the dwelling population of house sparrow. This is an international initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and numerous other national and international organisations across the world. The founder of The Nature Forever Society and the brains behind World Sparrow Day is Mohammed Dilawar.

Sparrows are heavily dependent on humans. We have lived in harmony with these little birds for 10,000 years. These sparrows survive on grass lands and agricultural fields. In urban areas they consume leftover food of human, animals and other birds. They also feed their chicks on small insects, maggots, larvae, nematodes and small snails. The loss of their natural habitat by cutting of large trees, which directly affect sparrows and other small birds has affected them. The modern horticulture trends of planting small imported ornamental plants instead of big trees and shrubs, use of pesticides and insecticides, decrease in insects, Electro-Magnetic Radiation (EMR) pollution in urban areas have all contributed to their decrease in population. The invasive species like rock doves commonly known as wild pigeons that require higher feeding requirement has created competition.

As an impact of the World Sparrow Day people around the world has a network where they can work together and exchange ideas about conservation and public education projects. The goal has been successful around the world. In August of 2012, the house sparrow became the state bird of Delhi.
